PREVIEW: Goldenote Stibbert Black Pearl III
Goldenote Stibbert Black Pearl III CD Player
Victor Goldstein has been importing (and obviously promoting) audio components for 18 years, and in my experiences evaluating them, he has never come up with anything that isn’t a serious assault on the high end. (That means he aims to expand the boundaries of the possible in music playback.)*
He had a long time association with Mike Kay (of Lyric Hi Fi, in Manhattan), a magnetic attraction based on the shared (and commercially shrewd) pursuit of the best in the sound of matters musical. He has never brought (to Sea Cliff) a component that was not eye-opening, in the sense of a revelation.
Goldstein’s newest offering, is an inauspicious looking black box, the tubed Goldenote Stibbert “Black Pearl” CD Player. And, at the very outset, it sounds like a digital playback machine. But leave it on for awhile, and put some thunder through it (I like the re-issued Mercury Florent Schmitt Tragedy of Salome) And the digits seem to fade away and replaced by the three-dimensional notes of music. You may well rest reassured that the longer this unit is on, the less you will be aware of its “character”, so to speak.
What I am saying clumsily and not with the hoped-for grace, is that this unit makes listening to CDs fun again. And it does so, even thought it does have what I’d call identifiable character, a sort of will (or interpretation, if you will) that it imposes over the music. Most excellent in the midbass, where the music’s fundamentals are, a gently sloping high-fidelity characteristic, but not at the expense of attack or transient dynamics (sounds contradictory, I know).
Good enough to keep as a reference by which to measure the shortcomings of the competition.

*Victor Goldstein would like us to point out that he is not the importer of the Goldenote, he represents them as a “PR person”.
